Last week, the Representative Office of the State of Hesse hosted the 16th Hessian Wine Festival in Brussels. With around 1000 guests in attendance, the wine festival is one of Hesse’s biggest events in Brussels and an important platform for networking. It is also an excellent opportunity for Hesse’s winegrowers to reach new customers and talk directly with decision makers.

At the event’s opening, Hessian Minister of European Affairs Manfred Pentz emphasized the role of the federal states in Europe. He also spoke on the current challenges facing the field of viticulture: “This evening, I would like to extend a special thanks to the winegrowers who, with their wonderful product, make it possible to hold an event like this in the first place. However, winegrowers are currently facing major challenges, including climate change and declining biodiversity. A high level of diversity in plant and animal species is a prerequisite for fertile soils and thus for the quality of the wines grown. To underline this issue, we have made ‘Biodiversity in Viticulture’ the central theme of this year’s event".

University President Professor Hans Reiner Schultz subsequently gave his keynote speech.

The wine producers who attended the event with a tasting stand included: Bergsträßer Winzer eG, Weingut Kurt Bug, Weingut Diefenhardt, Weingut Heinrich Eser, Hessische Staatsweingüter Kloster Eberbach, Weingut Jonas, Weingut Lamm Jung, Weingut J. Koegler, Weingut Laquai, Weingut Lohmühle, and Sekthaus Solter. Wines from the Hochschule Geisenheim University vineyard were also served at the event.
