This winter semester, the university appointed Ole Saß and Sebastian Sowa to two newly established professorships in the Department of Open Space Development. Both of these roles focus on design in landscape architecture.
Ole Saß: Design and Communication
Since 2022, Ole Saß has filled in for Jan Dieterle in the role of Professor for Design in Landscape Architecture at Hochschule Geisenheim University. Now he is taking on his own professorship, the newly established Professorship for Landscape Architecture, Design and Communication. Saß studied horticulture at Fachhochschule Dresden and landscape conservation at Nürtingen-Geislingen University and subsequently worked in various planning offices. He was, among other things, a project leader and associated partner at the SINAI Gesellschaft von Landschaftsarchitekten and has been managing director of SassGlässer Landschaftsarchitekten in Berlin since 2022. The Berlin Wall memorial is just one of the projects he has supervised in his career.
“Landscape architecture is largely a reflection of our environment. In my classes, I want to teach students to read and decipher their surroundings and find solutions to current issues through their designs,” says Saß of the foundational idea behind his teaching approach.
Sebastian Sowa: Design and Experimental Spaces
The Professorship for Landscape Architecture, Design and Experimental Spaces has also been newly established, with Sebastian Sowa being appointed to the role. Sowa studied landscape architecture and art at the Technical University of Munich and Folkwang University of the Arts. He has been a partner at SOWATORINI Landschaft since 2016. He has received numerous awards for his work as a landscape architect and has also taught at universities and colleges for years. Most recently, he taught as a visiting professor at the Faculty for Architecture in Rome. The focus of his teaching approach is on expanding designs in landscape architecture through experimental concepts, including installations and spatial art.
“I am looking forward to equipping students with the tools they need to craft good, precise designs and motivating them to be bold with their ideas. Last but not least, I want to pass on my enthusiasm for this fantastic line of work, which – with optimism at its core – has the capacity to tackle the challenges of the future,” says Sowa of his new role.
