The number of webinars and other eLearning options at Hochschule Geisenheim University has been steadily increasing in recent years; since 2018, the University has been involved in the joint "Digitally Supported Teaching and Learning in Hesse" project. In January 2020, students studying for a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture attended a webinar to explore the possibilities of a networked, digital industry
In the Building Construction and Small-scale Architecture module, the lecturer in charge, Professor Andreas Thon, Professor of Construction Technology in Landscaping, welcomed the students to a lecture on Building Information Modeling (BIM). He welcomed Stefan Günter, Director, BIM & Architecture of CADENAS GmbH, as a guest lecturer - but the podium remained unoccupied.
The product manager presented a webinar on BIM and outlined the interaction between a 3D model and the descriptive (semantic) attributes of building structures in the BIM design process. A smart database structure makes it possible to find components not only by their name, but also by their geometric shape or properties. The 3D components can then be downloaded in almost any file format. However, it was not only the new approach adopted by CADENAS that was innovative in this lecture, but also the appealing virtual format instigated by Professor Thon, who himself is a member of the BIM landscape architecture working group at Forschungsgesellschaft Landschaftsentwicklung Landschaftsbau e.V. (FLL) and the BIM in landscape architecture expert group at buildingSMART.
