The Professorship for Organic Viticulture was established in 2002. It sees itself as an interdisciplinary professorship within the overall framework of organic viticulture (EU VO 834/07). We therefore cooperate closely with all those departments at Hochschule Geisenheim University that are involved in the different sub-areas of organic viticulture.
The main themes of our research into the organic system of viticulture are the further development of this cultivation system, focusing particularly upon soil fertility and biodiversity, and the problems of crop protection (reduction of copper and wettable sulphur). A further key area is comparative research in the fields of bio-organic and biodynamic viticulture. Since 2006 we have been conducting a long-term trial which monitors all cultivation parameters including must and wine quality.
The principles of organic viticulture are firmly embedded in all the viticulture degree programs at HGU, in compulsory as well as elective modules.
