Competence Center Cultural Landscape (CULT)

science.practice.discourse.

Today's modern age is causing great changes in cultural landscapes. The use of landscapes through intensification of land use (agriculture, forestry, settlements, energy generation etc.) leads to ever more profound changes in these high-quality cultural landscapes. Characteristics such as historical elements and diversity, which determine value are irretrievably lost.

The Competence Centre Cultural Landscape works on these current social challenges of sustainable development of the cultural landscape in a cooperative network. To this end, we organise specialist events and further training and thus promote the development of professional standards.

Green & edible: Hochschule Geisenheim University’s contribution to the Street Food Festival 2018

Green, tasty produce and gardening know-how in Geisenheim town centre

At this year’sStreet Food Festival held on the Mother’s Day weekend the focus was on flavour and horticulture. Hochschule Geisenheim University contributed to the town’s event by offering a mix of green, tasty produce and horticultural know-how: at the festival held on May 12 and 13, the University presented bee-friendly planting schemes for window-boxes and rolled out a green carpet of grass on the steps of the Town Hall. In Café 22 foodies had the chance to sample salads made with edible flowers grown specially by the University, and AStA , the Student Committee, served international wines.

Foodtrucks served the festival’s visitors a range of culinary specialities from around the globe: Bratwurst and Flammkuchen were on offer as well as Thai and Mexican cuisine.  Geisenheim’s young winegrowers served their wines and the Lindenplatz was all about edible plants: here visitors could find plants for their  “snack garden” at home, everything from raspberry canes to apple trees, as well as a wide selection of herbs.  Hessen’s agricultural agency, the LLH, provided information on its services and demonstrated how to make plant containers out of empty milk cartons.  For the younger visitors there were fascinating facts to be learned about bees from the Rheingau Beekeepers’ Society, a Kids’ Area to play in and on Saturday afternoon the chance to join in the interactive concerts to their hearts’ content.

There was a full program of musical entertainment for the older generation, too: live musicians including the Geisenheim University AStA Band, Voice of Germany contestant Julio Hierrezuelo and Jonny the Pony rocked the stage. An Italian Night on the Domplatz with Pino Barone provided a very atmospheric  conclusion to Saturday’s events. Sunday’s program kicked off at 11 a.m. with  Kurt & Georg and pre-lunch drinks. On the Domplatz stage visitors were treated to the Herr Kall Band and Los 4 del Son with their Cuban sounds.

At Geisenheim’s 3rd Street Food Festival to celebrate Mother’s Day they are already something of an institution: students of the Jolie and T-Stars Schools of Dance demonstrated their skills with Hip-Hop and Electric Swing performances.  On the Sunday Geisenheim retailers showcased the latest fashion trends with a fashion show for young and old and opened their doors for a day of ‘Sunday Shopping’.
