We need an innovative and future-oriented study program that keeps pace with a rapidly changing professional world. This is particularly true when it comes to climate change, globalization and digitalization, especially for Geisenheim study programs on special crops, food and technology. That is why the university is reaccrediting its study program Horticulture (B.Sc) as early as winter semester 2019/20. This entails a fundamental revision of the curriculum including establishing specializations such as “Urban Green”. For the first time Geisenheim employees will be presenting the new curriculum at IPM Essen 2019, booth 3E67 to potential students and interested visitors from companies and associations.
“Services and Trade”, “Sustainable Production” and “Urban Green” are the three specializations of the revised Bachelor program Horticulture (B.Sc). In the field of services and trade students benefit enormously from Hochschule Geisenheim’s growing know-how of logistics and marketing. For the specialization “Sustainable Production” Geisenheim is well equipped with extensive outdoor areas and numerous greenhouses. The Departments of Vegetable Crops, Pomology, Urban Horticulture and Plant Use as well as Tree Nursery and Wood Physiology are part of the newly-revised curriculum. Thus, students can individually focus on single aspects of the wide spectrum of horticulture.
At Hochschule Geisenheim’s booth at IPM Essen students can find out what is behind “Urban Green”. At the booth scientists present a substrate-less system for facade greening. Urban green infrastructures contribute in various ways to a sustainable urban development and can mitigate climate change effects. The use of wall-mounted systems is receiving more and more attention, however they are still expensive and susceptible to failure. This is why Hochschule Geisenheim supports advancing the technology and does research on which plants are best for façade greening in general and at different locations.
A Geisenheim specialty will not be affected by the change: Thanks to a unique cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt students of the Bachelor program Horticulture will still have the opportunity to receive a professional school teaching qualification (Berufsschule) for horticulture.

As well as the traditional Bachelor program Landscape Architecture (B.Eng.) with a specialization in Landscape Construction, Open Space Planning, Landscape Planning and Nature Conservation Hochschule Geisenheim University also offers a dual course of study Landscape Architecture.
