Hochschule Geisenheim University Celebrates 319 Graduates in Schloss Johannisberg

This year, we had two reasons to celebrate: In a festive ceremony held in Schloss Johannisberg on Friday, July 29, Hochschule Geisenheim University said goodbye to two graduating classes – winter semester 2021/22 and summer semester 2022. In addition to 319 graduates who received their well-deserved Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, Hochschule Geisenheim University proudly awarded 6 doctoral certificates. As part of the ceremony, the university bid farewell to three retiring professors.

The festive atmosphere of Schloss Johannisberg provided the perfect framework to celebrate our 319 graduates who have successfully completed their studies. 255 of them were awarded a Bachelor’s degree and 64 students received their Master’s certificates. Some of the graduates have already ventured into professional life or started a master's degree or an academic career about half a year ago because Hochschule Geisenheim University celebrated two graduating classes in a joint ceremony: the class of the winter semester 2021/22 and summer semester 2022.

In order to give each graduate a proper farewell, the ceremony was split into two parts: In the morning, University President Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz as well as Prof. Dr. Alexander von Birgelen, Vice-President of Academic & Student Affairs, and Robert Lönarz, President of VEG – Geisenheim Alumni Association e. V. honored the graduates of the horticulture, fresh produce logistics, beverage technology, food safety as well as landscape architecture programs. In the afternoon, graduates of the viticulture and enology as well as wine business programs received their certificates. Highlight of each ceremony were the speeches of the graduates who reviewed their time at Hochschule Geisenheim University 

Doctoral certificates awarded to six junior scientists

In addition to the graduates of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs, the ceremony provided a perfect occasion to honor our junior scientists. Prof. Dr. Annette Reineke, Vice-President of Research, awarded a total of six doctoral certificates. Among the newly graduated doctors are Dr. Matthias Böhm who wrote his doctoral thesis on accidents involving deer, Dr. Christine Schlering, whose doctoral thesis focused on “Chemical composition of field grown vegetables as influenced by season and moderately reduced water supply“ as well as Dr. Beatrice Bernardi and Dr. Isabel Wasmuht.

In the afternoon, Dr. Larissa Strub and Dr. Yvette Wohlfahrt received their doctoral certificates. Strub wrote her thesis on “Cost Efficiency and Sustainability in Steep Slope Viticulture” and Dr. Yvette Wohlfahrt studied the “Effects of elevated CO2 on physiology, yield and fruit composition of Vitis vinifera L. cvs. Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon” Since 2014, a total of 32 young scientists have completed their doctorates at Hochschule Geisenheim University. At the moment, there are 80 doctoral candidates pursuing their research projects in Geisenheim; 41 women, 39 are men.

Festive farewell to three outstanding professors

University President Prof. Dr. Hans Reiner Schultz used the festive occasion to honor three professors who have retired or will be retiring soon: Prof. Dr. Frank Will, Department of Beverage Research, Prof. Dr. Jürgen Jaki, Professor for Physics and Prof. Dr. Stephan Roth-Kleyer, Professor for Vegetation Technology.
