During the event, visitors were able to take part in taster lectures, chat to current students, teaching staff, alumni, and academic advisors, take tours of the buildings, greenhouses, and research areas across the 8,000 m2 campus, and generally gain insight into the different degree programs and wide range of potential future career paths. There was also an information area, where the university's service departments presented themselves to prospective students, as well as refreshments offered by the student-run Altes Weinfass outdoor bar and ice cream prepared by the Food Safety department.
Study Programs and New Innovations
"We're delighted that our open day received so much interest. With our praxis-oriented and professionally qualifying range of degree programs, we are able to cater to a broad range of students," comments Professor Mirjam Hey, Vice-President of Academic & Student Affairs.
The university is also always working on further developing its degree programs. "We have recently established cooperative work-study programs, which integrate vocational training with university study and complement the range of courses we offer. We also want to further increase the levels of international networking within the degree programs. Building up the personal profiles of our students is an important concern for us and will be facilitated by the wide and continually developing range of options offered at the university," adds Mirjam Hey.
Currently, five of the eight bachelor's degree programs are available as cooperative work-study programs, and there are plans to expand on this in the future. The Wine Business Management MBA program is already available as a fully part-time master's degree program. In addition, many of the university's degree programs are already complemented by courses held by lecturers with professional, practical experience in their fields.
In terms of internationalization, almost all of the degree programs already include well-established opportunities to take international modules or to spend time abroad. Three of the university's eighteen degree programs are purely English-taught courses, and a selection of the master's degree programs are also offered in cooperation with universities outside of Germany. Around 14% of the approximately 1,600 students at Hochschule Geisenheim University are international students.
