Construction on Campus

Food Safety Building

The Food Safety Building is located on the western side of the campus and in the direct vicinity of the 'Alte Phyto' building, the Central Research Departments & Laboratories (ZIG) and the neighboring greenhouses. It contains dedicated spaces for teaching, seminars and lab work for the Food Safety degree program.

The two-story, compact building is positioned on Von-Lade-Straße and above the railway line between Koblenz and Wiesbaden that runs along the eastern bank of the river Rhine. With its simple gabled roof and rectangular floor plan (approx. 19 x 26 meters), this building is a logical addition to the campus in terms of its planning.

The façade comprises rear-ventilated cladding made up of dark silver pre-greyed solid wood. Structure is given to the façade through vertical lesenes, which follow the classic rules of structural timber protection and also reflect the design of the neighboring building. The light stone plinth that forms a robust base for the building is also intended to mirror the surrounding built environment.

The roof of the building is equipped with a photovoltaic system. Rainwater is also collected in cisterns to be used to irrigate the university's parks and agricultural areas.
