New Book “Mathematical Modeling and Simulation” to be Published in October

Hochschule Geisenheim University is excited to announce the upcoming publication of a new revised and expanded edition of "Mathematical Modeling and Simulation". In their book, Kai Velten, Dominik M. Schmidt and Katrin Kahlen of the university's Modeling and Systems Analysis department offer an introduction to the techniques of mathematical modeling and simulation for scientists, engineers, and students.

Mathematical Modeling and Simulation answers the most important questions in the field of modeling: What is a mathematical model? What types of model exist? Which model is appropriate for a particular problem?

It also explores topics such as simulation, parameter estimation, and validation and demonstrates how mathematical problems can be solved efficiently using professional open-source software.

Revised Reprint with Comprehensive Additions

The revised new edition contains around 150 pages of additional material, including crash courses on important programming languages such as R, Maxima and Python, a new chapter on virtualization, many new methods and examples, updated software-related procedures and a comprehensive book software that provides templates for typical modeling tasks.

The book will be published in October, but is available to pre-order now.

About the Authors:

Dr. Kai Velten is a Professor of Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematical Modeling and Simulation at Hochschule Geisenheim University. He has over 20 years of teaching and research experience and is the author of numerous scientific publications with a focus on differential equations and data analyses.

Dr. Dominik M. Schmidt holds a M.Sc. in Beverage Technology and a doctorate in Agricultural Sciences from Hochschule Geisenheim University and the University of Giessen. Since 2013, he has been working at the Department of Modeling and Systems Analysis at Hochschule Geisenheim University, where he has applied methods from the fields of mathematical modelling, computational fluid dynamics and data science in various research projects.

Dr. Katrin Kahlen holds a doctorate in mathematics and has been working at Hochschule Geisenheim University since 2011. She habilitated in plant cultivation science at the University of Hanover and has been an associate professor at Hochschule Geisenheim University since 2021. She is particularly interested in the modeling and simulation of plant-environment interactions and the development and use of virtual plants.
